Dirham (Silver, 30.6 mm, 3.12 g).

Obv: Kufic inscription لا إله إلا / الله وحده / لا شريك له (“There is no god but God alone; He has no partner”), with العباس بن / أمير المؤمنين (“al-‘Abbas, son of the Commander of the Faithful”) below. Inner marginal inscription names the mint and date; outer margin bears Qur’an 30:4–5.
Rev: Kufic inscription لله / محمد / رسول / الله / المستعين بالله (“To God. Muhammad is the Messenger of God. al-Musta‘in billah”); around, Qur’an 9:33 proclaiming Muhammad’s mission and the religion of truth.

Al-Musta‘in ruled during the “Anarchy at Samarra,” when rival military factions dominated the Abbasid court. His flight to Baghdad in 865 sparked a civil war against supporters of al-Mu‘tazz. After a prolonged siege, he abdicated in 866 and was subsequently killed. The naming of his son al-‘Abbas on this type records an intended succession that never took place.
