Description
This remarkable medieval anulus is distinguished by a raised rectangular tabula engraved with an unusual quadripartite composition. Four geometric fields, including grid-like or diaper elements, transform the bezel into a compact symbolic and almost architectural scheme.
Within the cultural landscape of medieval Jerusalem, this four-field arrangement evokes the Holy City's layered sacred spaces, communities and centuries-old traditions of guardianship. Its geometric vocabulary recalls signa, seal devices and schematic architectural compositions encountered across medieval Eastern Mediterranean material culture.
Comparable cast and engraved rings with prominent bezels, linear devices and compartmentalised decorative fields are preserved in various European and Mediterranean museum collections, reflecting the wider medieval and Byzantine tradition of symbolic and signet-type anuli.
Its slender hoop, articulated shoulders, green mineral patination and remarkably legible tabula preserve a compelling archaeological character. The unusual four-part composition gives the ring a distinctive identity evocative of Jerusalem, the Holy City, and its long tradition of custodians and guardians.
