A retrospective selection of photographs by the pioneering Swiss traveller and photographer Ella Maillart (1903-1997), drawn from the archive of over 16,000 negatives she deposited at the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, in 1989 — the source for a major retrospective exhibition the following year, of which this book is the extension. Some 200 images, shot and developed under often difficult field conditions during her journeys across Central Asia and beyond, are accompanied by texts from Maillart's own writings and a substantial essay by fellow travel writer Nicolas Bouvier, with a postface by Charles-Henri Favrod.

Out of print since its original 1991 publication and never reissued, this book has become genuinely scarce on the secondhand market.
