A finely painted porcelain incense burner in the Ko-Imari style, its rounded body decorated with a vivid phoenix-and-flower design in the classic Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gold, by a contemporary Arita master working in this historic tradition. 【Artist Profile】 Shumei Fujii (藤井朱明, b.1936) is a ceramic artist from Arita, Saga Prefecture, the historic heart of Japanese porcelain production. He began training in local overglaze-enamel (akae) workshops from the age of fifteen, and in 1962 his work was first accepted into the prestigious Nitten exhibition, going on to be selected fifteen times. He established himself as an independent nishikite (overglaze enamel) craftsman in 1963, and opened his own kiln, Shumei-gama, in 1974. He is a Nitten Kaiyu (exhibition associate) and a member of the Saga Art Association, and has received numerous awards including the Minister of Education Award at the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition. This piece, signed and inscribed "Shumei" (朱明) on the base, is a fine example of his work in the historic Ko-Imari style, complete with its original signed wooden box (tomobako). 【Condition】 Excellent.
