The other seven were lost over time due to heavy wear and tear—a common occurrence in the early 20th century. In many French households, napkins were not rotated evenly; instead, the same few were used repeatedly whenever the table was set, while the rest remained stored away in the wedding armoire. The “J.P..” initials are hand-embroidered, making each one subtly unique. Although the embroiderers followed a consistent design, slight variations in interpretation give each napkin its own character. They are hand hemmed. The damask background features the simple “damien” pattern, reminiscent of a chessboard, adding a classic and understated elegance to the linen.
