Two Chickens - Genki - 日本 - 明治時期(1868-1912)
This is the eighth volume of the *Collection of Flower and Bird Paintings by Famous Artists*, published by Songzantang during the Meiji period. It features a painting by Genki, titled "Two Chickens," a Japanese woodblock folding print.
The painting depicts a rooster and a hen. The rooster has long, ornate feathers and is looking up with its head held high. The hen pecks at the ground, their postures lively and expressive. The feathers are meticulously detailed and realistically rendered, complemented by a small scene of light grass and blueberries, typical of the Maruyama school of realistic flower and bird painting.
The colors are soft and elegant, printed on washi paper. A red ink inscription is present on the side of the print.
Dimensions: 27 x 20.5 cm. Condition: Slight stains and creases on the paper; a small insect bite in the upper blank area; no major damage. The back shows traces of the woodblock folding process. This is a loose page from an original Meiji period woodblock print.
