日本木雕仁王护面具—阿吽—佛教护法形象 - 木 - 日本 - 昭和年代(1926-1989)

Traditional Japanese carved wooden guardian mask Depicts Agyo, the open-mouthed form of the Nio temple guardian Approximately 14 cm high, 9 cm wide and 3 cm deep, excluding tassels Expressive facial carving with red decorative cords This striking Japanese wooden mask depicts Agyo, one of the two forms of the Nio, or Kongō Rikishi, the powerful guardians traditionally positioned at the entrances of Buddhist temples. The Nio are among the most recognisable protective figures in Japanese religious art. Their muscular forms and fierce expressions are intended to represent spiritual strength and the ability to defend Buddhist teachings against harmful influences. Agyo – The beginning of all things The two Nio guardians are generally distinguished by the position of their mouths. Agyo is depicted with an open mouth, while Ungyo has a closed mouth. These expressions are traditionally associated with the sounds "A" and "Un", symbolising the beginning and end of existence. The open-mouthed Agyo represents the dynamic, outward expression of protective power. This mask captures that symbolism through its intense gaze, strongly defined facial features and dramatic open mouth. Its hand-carved appearance preserves the natural character of the wood, while the red decorative cords provide a vivid contrast to the carved surface. In Japan, protective guardian imagery is also appreciated in traditional folk crafts and decorative objects intended for the home. The compact dimensions make this mask particularly suitable for wall display, where its expressive character can be appreciated at eye level. A distinctive work for collectors of Japanese Buddhist imagery, traditional masks and religious folk art.
