The outer lid is decorated with gold maki-e in an arabesque vine motif—symbolising longevity, growth, and the continuity of life. The interior of the lid features a finely executed maki-e design of a kinchaku pouch and falling maple leaves. The kinchaku, a traditional drawstring pouch, is often associated with good fortune and personal treasures, while maple leaves evoke the beauty and transience of autumn. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. This piece comes with its original fitted silk pouch, which has visible discolouration from age, and its original wooden storage box. There are minor signs of use, including some surface wear, lacquer cracking, and small blemishes consistent with age.
