Kroton, founded by Achaean settlers in southern Italy, became renowned for its athletes, physicians and association with Pythagoras, who established his community there. Its rivalry with neighbouring Sybaris culminated in that city’s destruction in 510 BC. The tripod featured on Kroton’s coinage evoked Apollo and the Delphic oracle, linking the city’s identity to its sacred foundation traditions.
