*Clear Stream and Ayu (Sweetfish)* by Junichi Sato – Japanese Hanging Scroll | Green Maples Reflecting in the Water, Lively Fish | Includes Inscribed Wooden Box and Certificate of Authenticity
A branch of green maple dips into the scene, while three *ayu* (sweetfish) swim through a clear, flowing stream. In *Clear Stream and Ayu*, Junichi Sato employs an elegant color palette and an airy, open composition to capture the coolness of the water, the spirited movement of the fish, and the vibrant vitality of early summer flora—all within a single hanging scroll.
At the top, green maple leaves unfurl along slender branches; their varying shades of green create a light, natural appearance. Below, three *ayu* are arranged in a dynamic, staggered formation. Their golden-brown backs transition into silvery-white bellies, with delicate details rendered in the fins, eyes, and the bright yellow markings near the gills. Splashes of white water scattered around the fish harmonize with the pale blue current, imbuing the tranquil scene with a sense of graceful, fluid motion.
The composition makes masterful use of *yohaku* (negative space), creating a vast, evocative distance between the maple branches and the fish. Fine golden specks are scattered across the background, adding a subtle, understated luster to the refined aesthetic. Rather than relying on complexity, the work conveys the essence of nature through a clean, minimalist approach.
The scroll is mounted with an elegant, light-greenish-gold patterned fabric, featuring beige borders at the top and bottom, and dark-toned wooden end-rollers. The signature "Junichi" (純吉) and a vermilion seal appear in the lower-right corner. The piece comes with a wooden storage box—inscribed with the title "Clear Stream and Ayu" and bearing the artist’s signature and seal—along with a biography of the artist and an official "Certificate of Authenticity."
According to the accompanying biography, Junichi Sato was born in 1955 (Showa 30) in Tokushima Prefecture. Also known by the art name "Ryoichi," he specializes in *kacho-ga* (flower-and-bird paintings), landscapes, *haiga* (haiku-inspired paintings), and figure paintings. His work has been selected for the Nisshun Exhibition, and he has participated in numerous group exhibitions.
