A well-crafted polychrome wooden figure of a Sôtô-sect Zen master 曹洞宗高祖 (sôtôshû kôso), seated on a black lacquered monk’s chair 曲録 (kyokuroku). Carved from wood and finished with gesso, the figure is painted in vivid pigments with delicate gilded details. The serene gaze is enhanced by inlaid reverse-painted glass eyes, while the warm skin tones show naturalistic wrinkles and contemplative folds. The master is draped in layered robes, predominantly dark purple, combined with sections of navy blue, and a gilt brocade silk patterned with scrolling foliage. The garments are gathered at the left shoulder with a ring secured by a vivid red cord. His hands rest in his lap, holding a gilt wooden ryûi 如意 (scepter of authority) in the right hand and a wooden shakujô 錫杖 (ringed staff) in the left, traditionally used to awaken beings from illusion and guide lost souls. In front of him rests a separate rectangular black lacquer stand displaying a pair of red shoes. The chair itself is lacquered black and fitted with gilded metal hardware engraved with scrolling foliage. The backrest features a gilded relief panel with a phoenix, crowning the figure, and below a gilt panel decorated in low relief with peonies 牡丹 (botan) and scrolling vines.
