Item Description A decorative woven basket vessel finished in glossy black lacquer with red lacquer showing through along the edges of the strips. The rounded, ball-shaped body is made of interlaced flat strips. The strips cross and loop around the mouth in a sculptural pattern, leaving open gaps in the weave. A dark inner insert sits inside the opening. The vessel rests on a round, shallow tray with a tall arched handle made of paired strips, so the whole piece can be carried like a basket. The tray floor is also woven and lacquered in the same black and red scheme. The two parts separate: the woven vessel lifts out of the tray. The maker is unidentified.
