Antique Burmese Buddhist Altar / Buddha Throne – Gilded Metal, Wood and Green Glass – 41 cm
Origin: Burma (Myanmar)
Materials: Lacquered and gilded metal, wood and green glass
Dimensions: 41 × 29 × 15 cm
Description
An elaborate antique Burmese Buddhist altar, designed to accommodate and display a Buddha figure.
The altar features finely worked, lacquered and gilded metal, with intricate openwork decoration, curling floral motifs, stylised mythical creatures and flame-like ornaments.
The symmetrical composition rises to a pointed central finial, creating an elaborate ornamental frame typical of Burmese Buddhist religious art.
The central section incorporates a decorative deep-green glass panel with embossed floral and geometric patterns. The glass provides a striking contrast to the surrounding gilded metalwork.
The altar stands on a rectangular red-painted wooden platform, raised on small feet and decorated along the front edge with gilded ornamental elements.
The metal decoration retains traces of its original red lacquer beneath the gilding, particularly visible on the reverse. The elaborate pierced ornamentation demonstrates the craftsmanship involved in producing traditional Burmese religious furnishings.
Such altars were used to display Buddha images in devotional settings, providing an elevated and richly ornamented setting for the sacred figure.
Condition
Antique condition, with an attractive patina consistent with age and use.
The gilding shows wear, darkening and localised losses, revealing the underlying lacquer in places. The wooden platform displays scratches, paint wear and other age-related marks.
The green glass panel is intact.
The reverse shows the wooden construction and slightly fragile fixing elements.
The altar is offered without a Buddha figure.
