Set of 4 Tibetan Buddhist Ritual Offering Figures – Hand-Coloured – from Mongolia – Late 19th to Early 20th Century
An very nice set of four miniature Tibetan Buddhist religious illustrations, associated with the Tibetan–Mongolian Buddhist artistic tradition and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This charming collection consists of four individual rectangular papers , each measuring approximately 7 × 5.5 cm, featuring colourful figures represented in dynamic poses and holding different symbolic and ritual objects.
The illustrations display elegantly dressed figures wearing elaborate garments, decorative ornaments and flowing scarves, characteristic of traditional Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist religious imagery. Each figure is depicted holding a different symbolic attribute, including a flowering lotus, a Buddhist-style wheel, a sword and what appears to be a flaming jewel or ritual offering.
The figures are represented in graceful and expressive postures, with finely outlined facial features, elaborate hairstyles and flowing robes that create a sense of movement and vitality. The illustrations are particularly attractive for their delicate colouring, combining orange, red, green, pale blue and black tones on naturally aged paper.
Each composition is enclosed within a rectangular decorative border and includes a short inscription in Tibetan script along the lower margin, possibly identifying the individual figure or its symbolic significance.
The imagery suggests a connection with Buddhist ritual offerings, auspicious symbols or protective religious traditions. The precise identification of the figures and their ritual attributes would require specialist examination and translation of the inscriptions. The illustrations appear to have been produced using traditional woodblock printing techniques, with colours subsequently applied by hand.
Such miniature religious images were traditionally associated with Buddhist devotional practices, ritual activities and the transmission of sacred iconography.
The four pieces are preserved in old and used condition, showing visible signs of age and traditional handling, including discoloration, staining, surface wear, worn edges, minor tears, abrasions and small paper losses. The lower right illustration presents more noticeable damage and losses along the bottom edge, while the other pieces retain much of their original composition and colouring.
