Attributed to Okada Kochu (岡田壺中, 1895–1955) – “Early Summer” (初夏) – Japanese Floral Painting – Hanging Scroll – Wooden Box
This elegant Japanese hanging scroll, titled “Early Summer” (Shoka), is attributed to Okada Kochu (1895–1955), a Japanese Nihonga painter active during the Taisho and Showa periods.
About the Artist
Okada Kochu studied Japanese painting under Matsumoto Fuko and Hayami Gyoshu. He was associated with the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) and was a member of the Seiyokai, an artists’ group established in 1914 under the leadership of Imamura Shiko.
The group included important figures in modern Japanese painting, such as Hayami Gyoshu and Omoda Seiju.
Kochu participated in the development of modern Nihonga during the early twentieth century, a period when Japanese artists explored new approaches while preserving traditional painting techniques.
About the Artwork
The painting features a delicate arrangement of seasonal flowers, including white blossoms, pink roses, and red flowers, surrounded by finely rendered foliage and graceful branches.
The harmonious colours, elegant composition, and carefully depicted botanical details create an atmosphere of tranquillity and natural beauty.
The artwork bears a signature and a red artist’s seal near the lower left corner.
The accompanying wooden storage box is inscribed with the title “Early Summer” (初夏), while the inside bears the inscription “Kochu saku” (壺中作), meaning “Painted by Kochu”, together with a red seal.
