SAMIA KERKENI — WHEN NIGHT UNFOLDS, 2020 When Night Unfolds is a unique abstract painting by Samia Kerkeni, created through fluid acrylic, artistic pigments and controlled pouring techniques on canvas. Deep black, burgundy and earthy-brown currents descend through the composition, interrupted by luminous white passages and flashes of emerald green, coral and muted violet. Pigments meet, separate and reconnect, creating the impression of a nocturnal landscape awakening from within. The title refers to the moment when darkness reveals that it is not empty. As night unfolds, hidden colours, currents and forms gradually emerge. Kerkeni transforms this transition into a powerful material experience in which shadow carries movement, memory and latent energy. A commanding dark passage forms the central visual axis. White formations break through like reflected moonlight, mist or mineral veins, while emerald accents introduce vitality and renewal. The resulting balance between darkness and illumination gives the work an intense yet contemplative presence. Created through a controlled pouring process, the composition combines artistic intention with the unpredictable movement of liquid pigment. Variations in density produce organic cells, marbled transitions and intricate formations that could never be reproduced identically. The imagery remains deliberately open: it may suggest geological strata, a forest after nightfall, underground rivers or an imaginary landscape shaped by darkness and light. A handwritten poetic inscription on the reverse extends the work’s emotional dimension, evoking hidden rivers awakening within velvet depths. Entirely created by hand, When Night Unfolds is an original painting—not a print, reproduction or edition. Her scientific background informs a process of continuous experimentation. Inspired by mineral formations, oceans, invisible currents and the transformation of natural matter, she creates abstract compositions in which pigment becomes an emotional language. Through fluid movement, layering and controlled unpredictability, Kerkeni brings together technical precision and intuition. Each painting preserves the physical memory of its creation and invites the viewer to discover a personal landscape within its forms.
