An unusual and finely carved wooden anthropomorphic ritual object, attributed to the Iban Dayak people of Kalimantan, Borneo. The carving depicts a stylised seated human figure with an elongated face, almond-shaped eyes, prominent ears with large pendant ornaments, and bent arms with the hands meeting in front of the abdomen. The carefully balanced composition and expressive facial features give the object a distinctive character. The lower section forms an elongated, rounded extension, suggesting that the piece may originally have served a specific ceremonial or practical function, although its precise use remains unidentified. The dark wood displays a rich, deep brown to almost black colour, with an attractive glossy patina, particularly noticeable on the raised surfaces. This surface appearance is consistent with prolonged handling and use, although the age of the object cannot be established from the patina alone. Traditionally, carved human figures among Dayak communities could carry symbolic associations with ancestral spirits, protection and ritual practices, but the precise significance of this particular carving remains uncertain. An intriguing and visually striking example of Bornean woodcarving, preserved in good condition with visible surface wear and a beautiful lustrous patina.
