A Kenrick cast-iron doorstop with two storks flanking a classical vase, late 19th century
A substantial Victorian solid cast-iron doorstop by Archibald Kenrick & Sons of West Bromwich, modelled in relief with two confronting storks flanking a classical vase, their long curving necks forming an elegant symmetrical composition above the vessel.
The lower section is richly cast with overlapping leaves and foliate ornament, the whole raised on an integral shaped base. The combination of naturalistic storks, classical vase and bold foliate decoration gives the piece a particularly sculptural character while retaining its practical function as a doorstop.
Archibald Kenrick & Sons was established in West Bromwich in 1791 and became an important British manufacturer of cast-iron domestic and architectural wares. During the 19th century the firm produced an extensive range of functional and decorative ironwork, including door furniture and door porters, with many designs identified by individual pattern numbers.
The reverse of the present example is cast ‘KENRICK’ and ‘No. 155’, identifying it as one of the firm’s numbered designs. Of particularly substantial solid-cast construction, the doorstop measures approximately 19 × 15 × 8 cm and weighs approximately 5 kg.
The dark surface retains an attractive aged finish, with rubbing and areas of wear revealing the warm reddish-brown iron beneath. There is surface oxidation, particularly around the base, together with scratches, marks and general wear consistent with age and use. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the description.
