An elegant Japanese hand-painted hanging scroll (Kakejiku) attributed to Kunii Ryunan (国井柳南), depicting ayu sweetfish together with maple leaves in a refined seasonal composition. Executed by hand on silk (Kenpon), the painting captures the delicate beauty of Japanese freshwater fish and the natural atmosphere of a flowing river. The ayu (鮎), commonly known as Japanese sweetfish, is a traditional subject in Japanese painting, particularly admired for its graceful form and association with clear streams and seasonal changes. The inclusion of maple leaves (Momiji) introduces an autumnal element, creating a harmonious composition that celebrates the beauty of Japan's changing seasons. The painting reflects the aesthetics of traditional Japanese Nihonga, emphasizing natural observation, delicate brushwork, and the expressive qualities of ink painting. The scroll is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako) and an additional outer storage box (double-box presentation), offering added protection and collectible interest. It is traditionally mounted with bone roller ends (骨軸), an attractive detail associated with traditional hanging scroll craftsmanship. This piece would appeal to collectors of Japanese Nihonga, fish paintings, ayu imagery, seasonal nature art, and traditional hanging scrolls. It would make an elegant display in a tokonoma, tea room, study, or Japanese-style interior. As a pre-owned artwork, it may show stains, foxing, fading, creases, discoloration, minor tears, repairs, or mounting wear.
