Three-case Inrō with Monkey and Peach Netsuke - Boat among Reeds - Lacquer, Gold, Wood - Japan - 19th century A Japanese three-case inrō on a black lacquer ground, complete with a cylindrical ojime and a carved wood netsuke of a monkey with a peach. The inrō is decorated in gold hiramaki-e with a quiet riverside scene. A small boat lies moored among reeds, beside a figure wearing a wide straw hat. On the reverse, a woven basket and wooden stakes stand at the water’s edge among tall grasses. The decoration flows across the cases, set against a wide expanse of black lacquer in a restrained, painterly style. One of the cases is fitted with an inner divider. The set is completed by a cylindrical ojime and a wood netsuke of a monkey hugging a large peach, a popular and auspicious motif symbolizing longevity.
