Several individuals are especially well defined, while additional partial fish remains can also be observed around the plate. Lycoptera was a small freshwater teleost fish characteristic of the famous Early Cretaceous deposits of northeastern China, and is one of the best-known fish genera associated with the Jehol-type fossil ecosystems. What makes this specimen particularly appealing is the presence of multiple individuals on a single natural plate, offering a snapshot of an ancient freshwater environment dating back well over 100 million years.
