Ancient Greek Hellenistic Terracotta Oil Lamp – Eastern Mediterranean – ca. 323–31 BC
An authentic ancient Greek Hellenistic oil lamp, crafted from buff-colored terracotta and dating to approximately 323–31 BC.
The lamp features a rounded body with a wide central filling hole surrounded by a raised circular rim, a short projecting nozzle with a wick opening, and a small lateral lug. Its simple yet elegant form reflects the practical craftsmanship and everyday material culture of the Hellenistic Greek world.
Oil lamps of this type were widely used throughout the Eastern Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period, following the conquests of Alexander the Great. Filled with olive oil and fitted with a wick, they provided illumination in domestic interiors, sanctuaries, and funerary contexts.
The surface displays a natural aged patina with characteristic earthen deposits, highlighting its archaeological character and historical authenticity.
An old handwritten collection label is preserved on the underside of the lamp, providing an additional detail of historical and collecting interest.
A fascinating example of ancient Greek daily life, offering a tangible connection to the traditions and craftsmanship of the Hellenistic Mediterranean.
