道森氏深海等足虫 標本牆壁支架 - Bathynomus doederleini Ortmann - 9 cm - 4 cm - 2 cm - 非《瀕臨絕種野生動植物國際貿易公約》物種 - 1
This is the closest thing the deep sea has to a woodlouse — except that it is the size of a hand, and it can go five years without eating.
Meet the deep-sea giant isopod — Bathynomus doederleini — a living fossil of the abyssal plain. Its ancestors were crawling across the seabed in the Cretaceous, 140 million years ago, while dinosaurs still walked the land. Today, it lives in near-total darkness, kilometres below the surface, in waters that would crush a human instantly.
Look at it:
The segmented body, pale ivory and cream, built like a series of interlocking plates — armour adapted for crushing depths.
The fourteen articulated legs, folded neatly beneath the body.
The two long, slender antennae, sweeping forward like feelers in the dark.
The fine, orderly segmentation from head to tail — a design unchanged, in essentials, for a hundred million years.
This specimen is the whole animal — gutted, posed, and naturally air-dried — soft tissues removed, leaving the exoskeleton displayed the way museum reference collections display it: clean, precise, and complete. It is a specimen only; no base or display case is included.
The deep-sea isopod became world-famous in recent years for one extraordinary fact: it can survive starvation for up to five years. When food is scarce — as it almost always is, in the abyss — it slows its metabolism to a crawl and waits, sometimes for years, for a carcass to drift down from the surface waters. It is the ocean's patient survivor, and in 2026, scientists studying this very species published their findings in the journal Cell, unravelling the genetic machinery behind that superpower.
At 8–10 cm long, this is a handsome, complete specimen — the kind of piece that stops a conversation, because people do not believe it is real.
Whether you are a collector of deep-sea curiosities, a student of marine biology, or simply someone who loves the strange and beautiful corners of the natural world — this giant isopod is more than a dried shell. It is a small, preserved piece of the abyss, ready to be displayed.
