About the print

The story of Kameya Chūbei and Umegawa goes back to Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s puppet play Meido no Hikyaku (The Courier for Hell), first staged in 1711. Chūbei is the adopted heir of an Osaka courier house and is in love with Umegawa, a courtesan of the Tsuchiya. Goaded by a rival, he breaks the seals on a packet of gold he has been entrusted to deliver and uses it to buy her freedom. This was a capital crime, and the lovers flee together to Chūbei’s home village of Ninokuchi.

In the standard version the rival is called Tanba-ya Hachiemon. The name Tanbaya Onizō belongs to a later reworking. A Kunisada triptych from the same publisher, staged as Koi no Tayori Sato no Kanabumi at the Kawarazaki-za in the 3rd month of 1851, uses the same role names. In that production Ichikawa Ebizō V played Tanbaya Onizō and Sawamura Chōjūrō V played Kameya Chūbei. Ebizō had only returned to Edo in the 2nd month of 1850 after eight years of banishment, and the role was one of his first new parts back on the Edo stage
