It represented strength, endurance, potential or divine favour. The oak was sacred to Jupiter and acorns could be used in offerings, and symbolized divine protection and power. In early Roman tradition, acorns were thought of as one of the first fruits of mankind. Writers like Virgil and Pliny mention this 'acorn age' (glandis aetas), an era of simplicity and natural abundance. In this context, the acorns symbolised an earlier and purer stage of human existence. Acorns appear in Roman decorative motifs like architecture, jewellery, wreaths or on Roman coins.
