Soviet Enamel Sign – “Двір зразкового порядку” – 33 × 26 cm – USSR, mid-20th century

Historical Background

This original enamel sign reads “Двір зразкового порядку” (translated: “Model Order Yard”).
It was issued in the Ukrainian SSR during the Soviet period as part of the socialist competition system, where households and communities were awarded for exemplary cleanliness, order, and civic discipline.

Such signs were displayed on building facades, gates, or fences to mark a courtyard as a model of Soviet everyday life and collective culture. Receiving this designation was considered an honor – a symbol of pride for the residents and a public recognition of their contribution to the ideals of the socialist way of life.

Cultural Value

More than a simple household plaque, this is a piece of Soviet propaganda, reflecting the ideology of discipline, collective responsibility, and order.

Today, these enamel signs are rare survivors, as most were discarded or destroyed after the collapse of the USSR.

Each example represents not only graphic design of its era but also a historical artifact of everyday Soviet culture.
