Jakub Julian Ziolkowski - Insomnia - 2012

A set of 8 sketchbooks in a hard box, limited to just 100 copies, by renowned Polish artist Jakub Julian Ziółkowski, represented by the prestigious Hauser & Wirth Gallery. One of the most intriguing moments is peeking into artists' sketchbooks. Discovering quickly drawn sketches and painstakingly crafted studies carries a thrill that can often be likened to peering into secret hideaways. Ziółkowski offers such an opportunity with his work "Insomnia," a meticulously published collection of drawings created between 2005 and 2012. These are categorized into eight themes the artist explored, such as notebooks titled "Mother," "Body Parts," or "People." The title "Insomnia" was chosen deliberately, as Ziółkowski explains that most of the drawings were made during long, sleepless nights. In the accompanying text, Ziółkowski recounts how, he came into possession of a large amount of old, yellowed paper. It lasted him for the next ten years of sketching. The sheets, filled with drawings and stacked in the artist's studio, became a visible marker of creation, a way of measuring time. "Insomnia" offers a deep dive into the artist's mind, revealing his ways of thinking and perceiving reality, as well as recurring themes that were often developed further in his paintings. The reproduced drawings, mainly done in pencil, replicate the original dimensions of the artworks. The work’s appeal is further enhanced by its limited-edition nature, with only 100 sets produced. In Ziółkowski's oeuvre, "Insomnia" holds significant value, offering a fresh context for his large-scale sculptural and painterly works. The drawings within this collection stand as independent, self-contained pieces, highlighting yet another facet of his artistry. This work aligns with the curatorial trend of juxtaposing large-scale works with sketches and drawings, opening intriguing possibilities for reinterpretation of Ziółkowski's creations and revealing him as a draftsman. Drawing, arguably the most intimate form of artistic expression, is, as the artist himself notes, “a medium that never lies.” Jakub Julian Ziółkowski is one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary art scene. Over the span of just a few decades, he has developed an exceptionally distinctive style, making his works nearly impossible to mistake for those of other artists. Ziółkowski debuted in 2004, at a time when the art scene was dominated by the Ładnie Group. Unlike his peers, Ziółkowski has almost from the start created in a style situated on the boundary between wakefulness and dream. His works gracefully balance fiction and madness, tackling the increasingly rare theme of grand narratives while simultaneously charming audiences with their unpretentiousness. Ziółkowski's art features references to expressionism, abstractionism, surrealism, oriental art, comic book aesthetics, and drawing conventions—just a few of the more apparent points of reference. His work is permeated with an experimental spirit that manifests equally vividly in his landscapes and psychological portraits. "Insomnia" print/paper, fabric, 32 x 23 x 5.5 cm; , the portfolio contains 8 notebooks with reproductions of works from 2005-2012: "00000 before Bananus", "Major Cosmic Second", "Flowers I", "Flowers II", "People", "Body Parts", "The Head", " The Mother " ed. 55 of 100.
