Georges Braque (1882-1963) - Si je mourais là-bas

Colour wood engraving by Georges Braque (1882–1963) Si je mourais là-bas is a collaborative work pairing Braque’s visual language with the poetry of Guillaume Apollinaire. The image presents a bold abstract composition in deep ultramarine, suggestive of symbolic or spiritual motifs, rendered in Braque’s refined late style. The print is hand-signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right and numbered in pencil (70/70) in the lower left, from a limited edition of just 70 impressions. Printed on high-quality paper with deckled edges, the sheet maintains a powerful presence with rich, saturated colour and striking contrast. A co-founder of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso, Braque later evolved into a more intimate and metaphysical abstraction, setting the stage for later developments in European modern art. His work influenced and conversed with contemporaries and successors such as Henri Matisse, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, and Le Corbusier. Braque’s exploration of shape and space resonates strongly with artists from various movements, including Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, Nicolas de Staël, Jean Dubuffet, Serge Poliakoff, Antoni Tàpies, and Victor Vasarely. His focus on pure form and symbolic imagery aligns him with both the lyrical abstraction of post-war France and the international tendencies of abstraction. Si je mourais là-bas" (1962) The prin is executed on thick, hand-made Chiffon wove paper, and it bears the "LB" watermark, which stands for Louis Broder, the publisher. This edition used high-quality, crisp white, rag-based paper specifically crafted for the portfolio, providing a subtle texture and bright white surface that enhances the color woodcuts. The sheet displays two minute foxing spots (the bigger just less than 3 mm), and the second only noticeable on close inspection. These do not affect the composition or overall presentation, which remains vivid and highly attractive. This print is catalogued as Vallier 181 in Dora Vallier's catalogue raisonné of Braque's graphic work.
