Ancient Phoenician Polychrome Glass Bead – Eye/Floral Motif
Ca. 6th – 3rd century BC
A rare and beautiful Phoenician glass bead of spherical form, decorated with vibrant polychrome motifs. The surface features a striking circular “eye” pattern in blue, white, and red surrounded by yellow ground, with additional applied green and blue details resembling floral petals.
Phoenician glassmakers were among the most skilled artisans of the ancient Mediterranean world. Their beads were not only valued as personal adornments but also believed to hold protective and amuletic properties, particularly the “eye” motif, which was thought to ward off evil. Such beads were widely traded across the Mediterranean, from the Levant to North Africa and beyond, testifying to Phoenician craftsmanship and influence.
