Bronze-Glazed Vase by Yoshiki Sugiura (Getsugama Kiln, Seto), with Original Tomobako
This refined vase was created by Yoshiki Sugiura of Getsugama (兎月窯) in Seto, a historic ceramic center renowned for its technical innovation and glaze experimentation. The piece is finished in a rich seido / bronze glaze (青銅釉), whose deep blue-green surface evokes the aged patina of cast bronze, shifting subtly between teal, indigo, and muted copper tones depending on the light.
The vertically fluted form enhances the glaze’s visual depth, allowing the color to pool and thin along the ridges, creating a quiet rhythm and sculptural presence. Beneath the glaze, the iron-rich clay body faintly emerges, adding warmth and complexity to the overall tonality—an effect highly valued in contemporary Seto ware.
Both elegant and restrained, this vase balances modern sensitivity with classical ceramic aesthetics. It is suitable not only as a functional flower vessel but also as a standalone object for contemplative display. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako), underscoring its authenticity and collectible significance.
A sophisticated example of modern Seto ceramics, appealing to collectors who appreciate subtle glaze depth, material dialogue, and understated form.
