Bronze-Glazed Vase by Yoshiki Sugiura (Getsugama Kiln, Seto), with Original Tomobako This refined vase was created by Yoshiki Sugiura of Getsugama (兎月窯) in Seto, a historic ceramic center renowned for its technical innovation and glaze experimentation. The piece is finished in a rich seido / bronze glaze (青銅釉), whose deep blue-green surface evokes the aged patina of cast bronze, shifting subtly between teal, indigo, and muted copper tones depending on the light. The vertically fluted form enhances the glaze’s visual depth, allowing the color to pool and thin along the ridges, creating a quiet rhythm and sculptural presence. Beneath the glaze, the iron-rich clay body faintly emerges, adding warmth and complexity to the overall tonality—an effect highly valued in contemporary Seto ware. Both elegant and restrained, this vase balances modern sensitivity with classical ceramic aesthetics. It is suitable not only as a functional flower vessel but also as a standalone object for contemplative display. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako), underscoring its authenticity and collectible significance. A sophisticated example of modern Seto ceramics, appealing to collectors who appreciate subtle glaze depth, material dialogue, and understated form. Yoshiki Sugiura (1915-1982) Born in Takahama City in 1915. He studied under Kitaro Kawamura. In 1950, he moved from Kyoto to Hiradobashi, following Kitaro Kawamura. Around 1952, he moved to Seto at the recommendation of Shizuo Honda. He also studied under Rosanjin Kitaoji and Bunzo Oe. He was selected for the Nitten Exhibition(Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). Seto ceramic artist Fumiyasu Sugiura is his son.
