Literature
Galerie Rottloff (Ed.): Otto Piene - Werkverzeichnis der Druckgrafik 1960-76, Karlsruhe 1977, Cat. Rais. No. 139.
Otto Piene (1928–2014) was a German-American artist, a pioneer of kinetic and technology-based art. Alongside Heinz Mack, he co-founded the influential ZERO group in 1957, advocating for a "new idealism" in postwar art.
Piene is renowned for his innovative use of elemental forces like light, fire, and air. His signature works include "fire pictures," "smoke pictures," and "Light Ballets," which incorporated movement and space. Later, his expansive Sky Art events, such as the 1972 Munich Olympics rainbow, brought his utopian vision to public spaces. His work is held in over 200 museum collections worldwide. He lived and worked in both Germany and Massachusetts.
