A finely engraved bronze vase decorated with mixed metal inlays depicting floral and naturalistic motifs. Bamboo engraved with a relief bird on the back. The different patinas enhance the contrast of materials and the depth of the relief. The vase is supported by an elaborately cast gilt-bronze base and features two elegant openwork side handles. With the Haitōrei Edict of 1876, which forbade the samurai from wearing swords, the metal masters of the Edo period transformed their craft.
