Absolute Auction – “Minamoto no Yoshiie and the Wild Geese” by Seiin – Taisho to Showa Period – - Seiin (静音) - 日本 (沒有保留價)

Absolute Auction – No Reserve. An impressive Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting Minamoto no Yoshiie (源義家), the legendary general of the late Heian period, renowned for his valor and strategic brilliance. This hand-painted work by Seiin (静音) was created in the Taisho to early Showa period (early 20th century) and represents one of the most iconic episodes in samurai history — “The Wild Geese Disarray” (Karimidare no Zu). According to legend, while leading his troops in the north, Yoshiie observed a sudden disturbance in a formation of wild geese in the sky. Interpreting this as a sign of hidden enemies below, he swiftly ordered a tactical maneuver — a moment that symbolizes both his keen insight and military genius. The composition captures Yoshiie on horseback, raising his fan and pointing forward, surrounded by his retainers, under a sky where wild geese scatter through the clouds. The delicate depiction of armor details, horse musculature, and flowing banners conveys a sense of dynamic motion and authority. Executed with mineral pigments and ink on silk, this painting displays refined craftsmanship and a balanced palette of golds, reds, and earthy tones. Mounted in elegant light-gold patterned silk, with cattle bone roller ends (without caps), and preserved with its original wooden storage box (tomobako). A superb example of samurai portraiture infused with historical narrative, ideal for collectors of Japanese warrior art, Nihonga, and cultural history. However, due to extremely high shipping volumes at this time, delivery may take over three months. Thank you for your understanding. Dear Valued Buyers in Europe, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thanks to your continued support, I have been able to carry on my business for more than ten years. As of June 28, 2025, new regulations have taken full effect in the European Union concerning the importation of cultural property from outside the EU. Under these rules, when items are classified as “Cultural Property” or as antiques over 100 years old, and they are not accompanied by an Export Permit for Cultural Property, certain restrictions may apply under both Italian law and EU regulations. This Export Permit for Cultural Property has traditionally been required when exporting items such as swords, and obtaining it generally takes about one month. For this reason, when shipping hanging scrolls that are more than 100 years old, I will continue to use the same HS code as for those less than 100 years old. I sincerely ask for your kind understanding regarding this matter. With gratitude and respect,
