Historically, such forms were sometimes also used as oil lamps with wicks or as small containers in tea or incense ceremonies. The artist's signature is inscribed on the underside. The 4th Generation Hata Zoroku succeeded a prestigious lineage of metal artisans dating back to the late Edo period. The first Zoroku, trained under Ryubundo II, crafted imperial seals for Emperor Komei and Emperor Meiji, as well as the golden seal of Tokugawa Yoshinobu. The fourth Zoroku became a certified preserver of traditional techniques and served as president of the Kyoto Metalwork Association. The original wooden box (tomobako) bearing inscriptions and the artist’s seal is included. There are areas of verdigris (green rust), surface abrasions, and discolouration due to age.
