Biography Yamamoto Sosen (1679–1760) Yamamoto Sosen was a mid-Edo period painter born in Kyoto in 1679 and died in 1760 at the age of 82. His real name was Morifusa, commonly known as Kazuma, and he used the alias Tanchosai. He became the adopted son of Yamamoto Sokken and studied the Kano school style of painting. He was appointed Hōkyō in 1725 and Hōin in 1749. He is noted for works such as the "Hyakka-zu Byobu," depicting birds and flowers in vivid colors on gold backgrounds.
