A poetic journey along the Silk Road, captured in ceramic.
Description:
This vase by Yusuke Miyazaki brings the romance of the ancient Silk Road to life through the delicate language of sometsuke nishiki. The flattened circular body rests on three pale feet, its ivory-toned surface adorned with blue underglaze designs that speak of distant journeys. On one side, a figure in a blue robe leads a camel through the desert, while on the reverse, two camels—one bearing a striped blue saddle, the other with a pink pack—traverse the dunes under a crescent moon. Blue lines trace the horizon, evoking the endless expanse of sand and sky. The neck is encircled by a rhythmic triangular pattern in deep blue, echoing the geometry found in Central Asian architecture. Floral motifs grace the vertical panels, rendered in free, flowing brushwork that contrasts with the structured lines elsewhere. The wooden box bears ink inscription.

Artist Profile:
Yusuke Miyazaki was born in 1954 in Ureshino, Saga Prefecture, a region deeply rooted in the four-century-old tradition of Hizen porcelain. In 1969, he began his apprenticeship at the Kozan Kiln, where he studied under the esteemed potter Kozan Ono and absorbed the classical techniques of porcelain making. In 1977, at the age of 23, Miyazaki established his own kiln, Taniho-gama, in the historic pottery district of Yoshida in Ureshino. By 1978, he was recognized as a full member of the Japan Kogei Association, an exceptional achievement for someone so young. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Miyazaki traveled extensively along the Silk Road, visiting China, Pakistan, Morocco, and Turkey. These journeys profoundly influenced his artistic vision, inspiring him to depict camels, rabbits, mosques, and geometric patterns that evoke the spirit of Central Asia. In 2000, his work was acquired by the British Museum, and he was featured in a documentary on Saga Television. In 2009, his works were included in the exhibition "Kogei Ima: Tradition and Innovation" at the Kyushu National Museum. Miyazaki has been selected for the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition more than 25 times and has received numerous awards, including the Governor's Prize at the first West Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition in 1981. He currently serves as a full member of the Japan Kogei Association and as a director of the Saga Ceramic Art Association.
