Antique Japanese KATANA sword stand.
Dragon mother-of-pearl.
The item is in good, but clearly used condition.
See pictures, as they are part of the description.
This piece depicts a dragon coiling around a sword above the clouds.
The flat surface and scattered patterns are clouds.
Dragons are sacred creatures in Japan and the Orient.
For samurai and military personnel, dragons symbolize strength, courage, victory, and protection. They were often used to pray for victory in battle and for long-lasting military fortune.
The inscription "Presented to the 74th Officers of the U.S. Army" is inscribed. (The inscription also features mother-of-pearl.)
We believe this was a gift from Japan to U.S. troops, such as those under GHQ, after the end of the war in 1945/1946
Japan lost the war to the United States. While one might normally imagine this would lead to resentment,
this spirit, derived from Japanese Bushido and Zen philosophy, emphasizes "integrity, courtesy, and sincerity" rather than hatred, even in defeat.
We can infer this was a polite gift, treating the enemy as a "respected guest" rather than an "enemy."
This is a rare item and was not generally sold.
This sword stand, a special gift from Japan to the United States, is a must-have. I would be delighted if it were owned by someone who respects Japanese swords and Bushido.
