Marcasite pseudomorph after Pyrrhotite with Quartz and Calcite crystals from Cavnic Mine, Cavnic, Maramureș County, Romania.
A superb and unusual specimen featuring marcasite pseudomorph after pyrrhotite with quartz and calcite crystals from the classic Cavnic Mine, Cavnic, Maramureș County, Romania. The marcasite has completely replaced the original bladed pyrrhotite, preserving its sharp pseudo-hexagonal forms and displaying a bright metallic sheen that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding quartz points.
Delicate, saddle-shaped caalcite crystals add a subtle, light-toned accent and provide a pleasing balance between the sparkling quartz and the sculptural sulfide blades, giving the piece strong three-dimensional aesthetics. Cavnic is renowned for such complex pseudomorphs and elegant gangue-mineral combinations, making this an excellent choice for collectors of Romanian classics and sophisticated sulfide suites.
The Cavnic Mine is celebrated for producing world-class sulfide mineral combinations, and this piece exemplifies the locale’s quality with excellent crystal form and visual appeal. Such combinations of pyrite and chalcopyrite, occasionally with iridescent surfaces, are highly sought after by collectors for their vivid aesthetics and mineralogical significance.
The Cavnic Mine in Maramureș County, Romania has not been operating since 2008, when all mines in the area were closed, the adits were sealed, and external infrastructure was demolished or is in the process of demolition.
