Each piece displays Sakata’s distinctive approach to clay, with rhythmic textures and abstract, architectural silhouettes that highlight the expressive nature of the material. The collection includes cylindrical, conical, and cubic forms in earthy tones of black, grey, and reddish-brown, evoking natural landscapes and geological formations. One of the four pieces is a wall vase with a hanging cord. Mashiko ware (Mashiko-yaki), internationally known through the Mingei folk craft movement and the works of Shoji Hamada, has been produced in Tochigi Prefecture since the late Edo period. It is admired for its earthy warmth, generous thickness, and tactile surface. Sakata reinterprets this tradition through contemporary forms that can serve both as vases and as stand-alone art objects. Jinnai Sakata, who studied under Shoji Kamoda and established his own kiln in Mashiko in 1966, is widely recognised for his innovative experimentation with ceramics, glass, and design. His works have been exhibited extensively in Japan and abroad. The tallest vase has a small structural opening that causes water to leak from the side if filled too high. The brown vase shows a small chip on the rim, along with minor blemishes and signs of use consistent with age. The wall vase has a hairline crack on the rim. Natural irregularities, surface texture variations, and kiln marks are visible and form part of the artist’s intended expression. Overall, good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
