Fine adze 1950s collected in the field Sentani
“Beautiful and finely aged adze from the Sentani area (West Papua), brought to the Netherlands in the 1950s by a Dutch family. This traditional tool was used by local carvers to shape wood and create the flowing forms characteristic of Sentani sculpture. The blade is firmly set in its original wooden haft, showing a deep, rich patina that has developed over decades of use and age.
The piece has clear marks of traditional craftsmanship: subtle wear, hand-shaped contours, and the unmistakable rhythm of long, skilled use. It is not merely a tool, but a tangible link to the artistic traditions around Lake Sentani, where carvers created some of Papua’s most elegant forms.
An evocative and authentic object with strong ethnographic presence—ideal for collectors of Oceanic art, interior designers seeking a unique accent piece, or anyone with an eye for historic craftsmanship.”
Condition: Excellent patina, minor age wear consistent with use
