頂針 古董 - 骨壳中的金丝镶嵌
This rare filigree thimble was made in England at the end of the 18th century, around 1780 and before 1800. Such luxury articles, although completely unpractical for use, were made as a status symbol as only the fortunate few could indulge in such a luxury. This filigree thimble is contained in an original turned bone case with screw cover. The thimble has a deep filigree scroll frieze and a vacant oval cartouche for initials. Such a thimble would have been an ideal gift for a loved-one and was probably often given as a wedding present from the bridegroom to his bride. In this case, the thimble would not have been used but treasured as a keepsake, explaining the MINT condition of this example. The bone case is also in excellent condition.
At the time that this thimble was made, it was not desirable to stamp such delicate items and because it was not compulsory the thimble is unmarked but tested sterling silver.
Total weight = 13.0 grams (thimble 3.8 - bone case 9.2 grams).
