Exquisite Glass Sponge with Symbiotic Shrimps – Camotes Sea, Philippines
Collected at a depth of 120 meters in the Camotes Sea, Philippines, this exceptional glass sponge showcases the delicate silica lattice typical of the class Hexactinellida. Its naturally sculptural, porous structure gives it an elegant and ethereal appearance.
Inside the sponge lives a pair of Spongicola venusta shrimps, a species known for its lifelong symbiotic relationship with glass sponges. The shrimps enter the sponge as larvae, grow inside, and eventually become permanently enclosed. This extraordinary biological partnership inspired traditional Asian symbolism, where such specimens were given as wedding gifts representing eternal companionship and fidelity.
A fascinating specimen of both scientific and decorative value.
Note: One of the shrimps’ chelae (claws) is clearly visible through the sponge’s lattice structure.
Acrylic stand included.
