In 1989, perfect conditions prevailed in Bordeaux and, of course, at Château Mouton Rothschild. The sunny, hot August during the ripening phase led to one of Mouton's earliest harvests: from September 6th to 25th. The long harvest duration of just under 20 days also testifies to the perfect weather conditions in 1989 – the various grape varieties could be harvested at the ideal time. The 1989 Mouton Rothschild is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Merlot.
In the year the Berlin Wall fell, the choice fell on the German artist Georg Baselitz, whose 1989 wine label comments on the historic event, "over there, now here."
