The distillery was established by James Findlater and two friends, Donald McIntosh and Alexander Gordon, on leased land from the Earl of Macduff.
The exact date of its founding is uncertain, but the operating license was officially granted in 1823.
The distillery was later acquired by John Gordon. In 1853, he partnered with George Cowie, who became the sole owner upon John's death in 1867.
His son, Alexander Mitchell Cowie, built a railway line from the distillery to Dufftown Station.
Alexander's only son died in the war in 1917, and the distillery was sold to John Walker & Co.
A new distillery was built in 1964, but the original stills were used.
The malting floors were closed in 1968, and since the late 1990s, production has been computer-assisted.

A single malt aged in first- and second-fill sherry casks.
Tasting Notes:
A nose marked by notes of fruit (apple, pear), Calvados, and barley sugar, accompanied by a vegetal freshness.
