晚期罗马 綠松石玻璃 獅子造型圓盤吊墜 (沒有保留價)
A fine Late Roman turquoise glass pendant featuring a lion. The pendant is circular in shape with a thick loop at the top for suspension. On the circular face, a lion with a large mane is depicted in relief walking to the left. A crescent moon and star can be seen in the field above the animal's back. The reverse is unadorned. Some wear and dark encrustations to the surface, consistent with age. A minor chip to one side.
As in many societies in antiquity, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth in the Roman Empire. With the expansion of the empire, Roman jewellery became more elaborate in its designs. Such glass pendants would have been worn by Romans as good fortune charms to bring good luck and ward off the evil. Iconographies were extremely differentiated, including apotropaic symbols, images of deities and animals.
Measurements: L 2.4cm x W 1.6cm
Provenance: From the collection of the late Mr S.M., London, UK, collected from 1970-1999.
