Byôbu 屏风 (折叠屏风) - 金箔,漆木,丝绸 - In the style of Kanô Tanyû 狩野探幽 - 日本 - 江户晚期(19世纪上半叶)
A magnificent tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a serene Kanô School-style painting on a radiant gold-leaf ground, depicting an idyllic landscape.
At the centre stands an ancient cherry tree 桜 (sakura) in full bloom, its gnarled moss-covered trunk slanting gracefully. Perched upon it is a pair of golden pheasants 錦鶏 (kinkei). They overlook a gentle meandering stream flowing past a hilly outcrop. At the base grows a full bush of yellow rose 山吹 (yamabuki), accompanied by bright red and pink roses バラ (bara).
Signed, inscribed and sealed twice in the upper left corner: “Painted by Kano Hôin, at the age of sixty-four.”探幽法印六十四斎筆 and sealed ‘Ushin’ 守信.
This should be understood as an attributive homage to the artist Kanô Tanyû 狩野探幽 rather than a work by his hand.
Painted in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper against a gold-leaf ground. The screen is bordered by two silk brocade bands, a narrow inner ecru band and a wider blue outer band, and set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with gilt metal hardware engraved with scrolling foliage.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (first half 19th century)
Dimensions:
Total width 380.8 cm (2 × 64.8 cm, 4 × 62.8 cm); Height 167.8 cm
Considering its age, the screen is in a very good restored condition with expected traces of wear, including some losses along the edges and a restrengthened hinge on the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
