Okutsu Isshin-sai [奥津一心斎]– “Shikunshi” Large Natsume (Tea Caddy)
A masterful tea caddy created by the distinguished lacquer artist Okutsu Isshin-sai, renowned for his exceptional skill in maki-e and traditional tea ceremony lacquerware.
This elegant large-size natsume (used for storing powdered green tea during the tea ceremony) is decorated with one of the most esteemed themes in Japanese arts: Shikunshi ― The Four Noble Plants.
◆The Four Gentlemen – A Symbolic Garden of Virtue◆
The design beautifully displays:
Chrysanthemum – symbol of longevity, aristocracy and the Japanese Imperial family
Bamboo – resilience and purity
Plum blossoms – hope, and the promise of spring
Orchid – grace and noble integrity
Together they represent the four noble virtues cherished in Zen and tea ceremony philosophy.
◆Exquisite Traditional Techniques◆
Gold maki-e meticulously drawn with refined brushwork
Raden (Mother-of-pearl inlay) glowing with iridescent blue and violet hues
Deep, mirror-like black urushi lacquer created through numerous painstaking layers
Delicate carving and flawless craftsmanship
Each detail reflects a high level of mastery—achieved only after decades within Japan’s lacquer tradition.
The lacquer surface subtly changes with the surrounding light, making it a captivating centerpiece in both traditional and modern interiors.
This is not merely a functional item—it is a refined art object that carries the spirit of wabi-sabi and the cultural richness of the Japanese tea ceremony.
