【Product details】
This is a Showa period katana signed by Fujiwara Kazunori, a recognised swordsmith from Aichi Prefecture. The tang is inscribed: 三陽眞弓山麗住藤原一則作之, which reads “Made by Fujiwara Kazunori, residing at the base of Mount Mayumi in the Sanyō region.” This particular phrasing, “Mayumi-sanroku ju眞弓山麗住”, was used by Kazunori only on select blades considered to be of superior workmanship.
Kazunori’s real name was Nakano Renji (1889–1963). He was the grandson of Unju Kazunori (first generation), a retained swordsmith of the Takatō domain in Shinshū and a disciple of Unju Korekazu. During wartime, Kazunori received official army commissions and was ranked among the top swordsmiths of the era. In the Seidai Tōshō Iretsu, he was listed under the highest classification: “Kihin no retsu – Saijō Ōwaza – Yokozuna-kaku.” He is regarded as one of the foremost smiths of Shōwa-era Aichi.
The sword comes with a complete military-style mounting. The tsuba is made of brass with engraved cherry blossom motifs. The menuki are made of iron, also featuring cherry blossom designs. The scabbard is wrapped in leather. A wooden blade is fitted inside a plain wooden storage scabbard (shirasaya), and a silk bag is also included.
This sword comes with a photocopy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate from Aichi Prefecture, number 66009, as the original will be returned to the government. The certificate details are as follows: Type: Sword, Length: 65.7 cm, Curvature: 1.8 cm, with one peg hole, and an inscription reading "San’yō Mayumi-sanroku jū Fujiwara Kazunori saku kore
" on the obverse. The certificate was issued on 7 November, Heisei 8 (1996).
There is patina, rust, and minor blemishes on the mounting. The opening of the wooden storage scabbard shows cracks. Please refer to the photos for further condition details. The display stand is not included.
Length of the blade: 87 cm
Total length including black scabbard: 100 cm
Total length including storage scabbard: 102 cm
