The great murder conspiracy: Claudius II Gothicus became emperor after a large part of the army leadership, including the praefectus praetorio Aurelius Heraclianus, staged a coup against Emperor Gallienus in September 268 near Mediolanum (present-day Milan). Claudius II and the future emperor Aurelian were very likely involved in this conspiracy. The leaders and soldiers of the army were not all pleased with the murder of Gallienus and his wife Salonina. A rebellion briefly threatened, which could only be bought off with the promise of a bonus of 20 aurei (gold coins) per person in honor of the new emperor's accession.
