鯨魚 - 牙齒化石 - Basilosaurus - 11 cm
11 cm long x 3.6 cm at wide at widest point fossilized Basilosaurus Molar from late Eocene
This is a beautiful & high quality Basilosaurus Molar which has been professionally restored & conserved.
The molar is 11 cm long which is indicative that Basilosaurus was an enormous predator and the ridges on the molar is representative of cutting & shearing performed by these teeth. Different photos have been provided and amongst those the size comparison photo with Otudus Sokolovi (7.1 cm long) and Otudus Megalodon teeth (9.5 cm long) indicates that this teeth is by no means small in size. One side note, Basilosaurus and Sokolovi did lived at the same time in late Eocene epoch around 34-40 Million years ago and there is evidence of these top predators interacting. In other photos, the molar looks like a standing person which makes it very cool in a way.
There is top notch restoration & conservation work done of the teeth to protect it and make it essentially long lasting. These teeth are found embedded in hard /semi hardened rock, so excavation is quite challenging. The restoration work includes central rebonding and minor work mainly at the root. The shine of the teeth is due to conservation material.
It gives good feeling to hold & look at this teeth reminding of the wonderful Basilosaurus.
